Computational Trust
Definition: Trust that is verified mathematically rather than assumed psychologically, established through cryptographic proof, auditable decision logs, and third-party verification of agent behaviour.
Computational Trust is the structural alternative to the psychological trust model that governs human commerce. When a human trusts a brand, that trust is built through experience, reputation, and emotional association. It is subjective, non-transferable, and resistant to quantification.
When an AI purchasing agent evaluates a product, it does not "trust" in any psychological sense. It computes a trust score from verifiable signals: Has this vendor delivered on time in 97.3 per cent of transactions? Are its product specifications independently verified? Does its pricing data match across multiple sources? Is its sustainability certification current and issued by a recognised body?
Computational Trust operates through three mechanisms:
Cryptographic verification: The agent's decision process is logged in a tamper-evident format, enabling after-the-fact auditing of exactly which criteria were applied and why a product was selected.
Auditable decision logs: Every purchasing decision produces a complete audit trail that third-party services can review to verify alignment between the agent's stated optimisation objective and its actual behaviour.
Third-party certification: Independent verification bodies assess and certify that AI purchasing agents meet defined standards of alignment, transparency, and consumer fidelity.
Computational Trust is distinct from the Trust Paradox™, which describes the lifecycle by which trust in AI intermediaries degrades. Computational Trust is the proposed structural solution to the Trust Paradox.
